Statements

As we sit in the back of an ambulance with blankets draped over our shoulders, a detective goes over our statements for the 100 th time. "So you were in the basement and the pipe went off by itself?" He asks. "That's what we said." Olivia answers, annoyed. The detective rolls his eyes. He jots something down on his yellow note pad. "Ok, but why didn't you shut it off?" "We tried it." I reply. "Yeah, I believe you said the water threw you back." "Maybe I'm ignorant about how this works, but right now isn't your job to take our statements, even if you don't believe them?" Olivia questions. The detective places the notepad into his pocket. He gives Olivia an icy stare. Just then, a black Buick rolls up. The back window lowers slightly. All we can see is a pin striped arm. It ushers the detective over. The detective talks to the mystery man for a moment. He then walks back to the ambulance, peevish, shaking his head. "You're lucky. No charges are being pressed." He announces. Olivia and I are relived, yet confused at the same time. We knew this was an accident that was clearly out of our hands. How could anyone see it differently? "He would like a word with you though." He clarifies. "Who?" I ask. The detective smirks. "Why, your boss."
